Chainsaw Safety Training


This course is aimed at producing a chainsaw operator that is able to safely demonstrate and apply the knowledge for chainsaws use contained in the Approved Code of Practice. They will also be able to demonstrate and apply their responsibilities under the requirements of the Health and Safety legislation in relation to chainsaw operation.

Note: This course is designed for the occasional user, as an introduction to chainsaw use, and for the use of a chainsaw in a workplace. This is not an advanced course and does not cover tree felling.

Course Content

In line with code of practice guidelines the course covers the following knowledge and skills:

  • Describe the requirements relating to the transport and use of chainsaw fuel
  • Describe personal protection and first aid requirements for chainsaw operators
  • Check a chainsaw and its components
  • Explain how a chainsaw functions
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the hazards which influence the operation of the chainsaw
  • Prepare to operate a chainsaw
  • Start and test a chainsaw
  • Use a chainsaw to make cuts
  • Tension and compression wood
  • Kickback risk management

The course can be customised to incorporate specific company policies and procedures for chainsaw use.


  • Be 16 years of age or over
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.0 (General Training). Proof of this will be required.

NZQA Unit Standards Included

6916 Demonstrate knowledge of the Approved Code of Practice relating to chainsaw use
6917 Demonstrate basic chainsaw operation


One or two days.

There is both a one day option and a two day option available. The one day course is only available where an organisation has a relevant Health and Safety Programme that addresses active chainsaw use in the field and this can be verified and documented by AMS Group/Natural Instincts, or is used as a refresher. The full two day programme covers the Code of Practice allowing for a modified programme to meet specialist workplace requirements.

Attendance Capacity

Maximum of 8 trainees per trainer. Minimum numbers can be negotiated upon request.

Special Notes

It is recommended as “best practice” that refresher training is completed every 2 years.
