Managing Risk When Working At Heights 

Overview: Safety Planning and Fall Prevention Strategies

This Working at Heights safety training course is NZQA accredited. This course encourages risk management and the prevention of safety incidents and is critical in managing safety on the job under the HSWA.

People who complete this unit standard will be able to work well in established operating and maintenance environments in industry and plan tasks and operations where risks of falls exist. This is a hands on programme that requires the completion of two Safety Plans from a work environment to give a practical knowledge to apply to the work environment.

Who Should Attend

Supervisors and managers who are responsible for others when they are working at height and where potential for a fall exists.  This will include industries like building and construction scaffolding, plumbing, gasfitting, cargo handling, demolition, glazing, boating, mechanical services, engineering.

Course Outcomes

People who complete this course will be able to:

  • Assess the risks when work is to be undertaken at height and there is a fall potential
  • Prepare a safety plan to manage risk when fall prevention strategies are required
  • Review a safety plan to manage risk when fall prevention strategies are required.

The safety plans developed will be specific to a particular task or activity within your relevant industry and will produce a ‘best fit’ solution to both control risk of falls as well as effectively complete the required operation.

Pre-Requisites

  • Unit Standard 23229 - Use safety harness systems when working at heightOR demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills 
  • this will require a relevant level of physical fitness and ability to work at heights
  • Be 16 years of age or over
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.0 (General Training). Proof of this will be required.
