New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation - Commercial Transport (Level 3)

Programme Goals

This qualification is for people intending to pursue focused development in the skills, capabilities, knowledge and attributes needed to enter an industry where both light and heavy transport assets are used and to succeed at NZQF Level 4 or above, within the context of a field of study or career pathway in Transport.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • identify and apply knowledge obtained from a variety of specialised sources relevant to their chosen field(s)
  • manage own learning and work effectively as an individual and as a team member to achieve relevant goals
  • solve problems and communicate using a range of appropriate media
  • evaluate opportunities and develop plans for study and career pathways pertinent to their chosen field(s).

Heavy or Light Transport

As part of the skills obtained through the Graduate Profile on this programme, students will opt to complete a Heavy or Light Transport component.

Graduates completing Heavy Transport will receive their Class 2 Truck Licence, Dangerous Goods Endorsement, Logbook, Forklift and F-Endorsement.

Graduates completing Light Transport will achieve either their full Class 1 or their Restricted Drivers Licence, Dangerous Goods, Logbook and Forklift.  

Please note that the F-Endorsement will not be available on the light transport component.

Minimum Course Numbers

This course is subject to learner number requirements and may be postponed to a later date or cancelled if this number is not met.


This course is run full-time for 15 weeks where you will spend 4 to 5 days each week participating in classroom training, self-directed study, industry site visits and work experience.

Course Locations

This course is available at a number of AMS Group locations and is currently being advertised in the Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton/Waikato, Rotorua, Whakatane, Tauranga, Hastings/Napier, Palmerston North and Christchurch regions.

Course Fees

There is a course fee of $2500.00.  This fee includes all site visit, course materials and safety equipment costs and (if eligible) can be organised as part of your StudyLink application.  Please note that a fees-free option is available through the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for those participants that meet the TEC criteria.

Education Pathway

This qualification builds on broad qualifications at NZQF Levels 1 and/or 2, including the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Levels 1 [Ref: 0928] and/or 2 [Ref: 0973].
Holders of this qualification will be able to progress to further study or training related to the context of their study, at NZQF Level 3 and above, including further transport related programmes and the New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4) which will support those candidates wishing to progress on to Diploma and Degree subjects.
